The Scarab Club is delighted to present an exclusive solo exhibition and beam signing by the esteemed artist Nora Chapa Mendoza. Titled "Stages of a Life: A Retrospective," this exhibition masterfully curated by the Scarab Club’s new gallery director, Dalia Reyes, unveils the profound artistic evolution of Nora Chapa Mendoza over the years.

This extraordinary collection encompasses a diverse range of mediums, including assemblages, paintings, paper mache reliefs, and various mixed media works. Nora's art, reminiscent of Frida Kahlo's introspective style, serves as a captivating visual diary, offering profound insights into the rich tapestry of experiences that define her life.

"Stages of a Life" opens to the public on Friday, October 13, from 5 pm to 8 pm in the main gallery, offering a unique opportunity for art enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the creative journey of this distinguished artist. The beam signing ceremony, a symbolic gesture of connection, will take place at 6:30 pm in the historic lounge.

At the age of 91, Nora Chapa Mendoza remains a stalwart creator and a powerful voice for the Latino community. Her life story is a testament to unwavering dedication and a passion that has endured through the decades. Nora's art, guided by her heart, speaks poetically and boldly, reminding us of the inherent beauty found within chaos. Her creations unveil quiet moments of reflection that possess the transformative power to rejuvenate our spirits.

Nora Chapa Mendoza, born in 1932, is a revered painter and educator based in Detroit, Michigan. From a young age, encouraged by her Mexican parents, she embarked on a journey of artistic exploration. In 1953, she made a pivotal decision to relocate from Galveston, Texas, to Michigan, shaping the trajectory of her artistic endeavors.

Her artistic journey was enriched by formal education, including studies at the Detroit Center for Creative Studies and Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan, under the guidance of accomplished painters Richard Koslow and Ljubo Biro. Mendoza's painting styles have spanned from abstraction to realism, with a consistent commitment to civil rights and Chicano identity.

As both an artist and activist, she has seamlessly integrated her art with various causes, advocating for migrant workers, fair labor practices, indigenous identity, and civil rights. Nora Mendoza's influence extends beyond Michigan, showcased through international exhibitions and recognition in private, corporate, and university collections.
