Juror Bio

Carole Harris is a native Detroiter and a renowned fiber artist with a studio practice that spans several decades. After operating a commercial interior design firm for over 33 years, she transitioned to dedicate herself exclusively to her art practice in 2007. Her work redefines and subverts traditional quilt making, embracing various techniques, irregular shapes, textures, materials, and objects.

Inspired by the vibrant colors, people, landscapes, culture, and rhythms of urban life, Harris's work focuses on mapping the changes brought on by the intersection of time, memory, and place through cloth. Her artistic expression is also extended into mixed media, papermaking, and various forms of collage.

Harris's art has been published and exhibited worldwide, and it resides in several institutional and museum collections. These include the Detroit Institute of Arts, Cranbrook Museum of Art, Michigan State Folk Art Museum, Mott-Warsh Collection, Henry Ford and Detroit Receiving Hospitals, and the Progressive Insurance Collection.

Recent exhibitions include solo exhibits at Sargent’s Daughters Gallery in New York, NY; the Dennos Museum in Traverse City, MI; The Grand Rapids Art Museum in Grand Rapids, MI; the Hill Gallery in Birmingham, MI; Simone DeSousa Gallery in Detroit; and the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY. In 2015, she was honored with a Kresge Foundation Visual Arts Fellowship.
